One of the world's largest organizations for life science research is deploying the Fragment AnalyzerTM Automated CE Instrument to work on DNA and RNA investigations.
Dr. Hiroshi Tarui uses the instrument regularly as a researcher in the Division of Genomic Technologies at the RIKEN Center for Life Science Technologies in Yokohama, Japan.
"I am using the Fragment Analyzer for analysis of total RNA, PCR products and next-generation sequencing (NGS) libraries," says Dr. Tarui.
With over 3,000 scientists at multiple campuses throughout Japan and an annual budget of $760 million from the Japanese national government, the RIKEN Center in Yokohama focuses on developing key technologies for breakthroughs in medical and pharmaceutical applications.
The Fragment Analyzer aids those efforts.
"I think the Fragment Analyzer is a good instrument because of the simple end-user interface and flexibility of analysis," said Dr. Tarui. With the Fragment Analyzer, he added, "I get stable results that have correlation with other instruments used in our laboratories."
Besides RIKEN, more than a dozen laboratories in Japan are equipped with Fragment Analyzers, made by Advanced Analytical Technologies, Inc. (AATI) in Ames, Iowa. AATI sells into Japan through AsOne corporation, an Osaka-based life science company that has been active in Japan's scientific marketplace for over 50 years.
"The Fragment Analyzer is an excellent instrument," said Mr. Naoto Momoda, Sales Manager of the Fragment Analyzer for AsOne. "Many Japanese customers are interested in it. It is the only suitable instrument for analysis of both small and large NGS fragments."
Dr. Steven J. Lasky, AATI's CEO, credits AsOne for the rapid introduction of the Fragment Analyzer into Japan.
"The sales and technical staff at AsOne are extraordinary," said Dr. Lasky. "We are very pleased with their accomplishments in a competitive market. Japanese customers have very high expectations not only for the scientific specifications of instrumentation they buy, but also for the technical knowledge of those who support the instruments in the field. The efforts of AsOne's sales and technical support staffs have generated a strong introduction of the Fragment Analyzer into university, government and corporate labs in the Japanese market."
