International Rice Research Institute Implements New Technology

A new instrument for analyzing DNA and RNA is now advancing rice research at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Los Baños, Philippines. The Fragment AnalyzerTM instrument will help improve the genotyping of molecular markers linked to specific rice traits that can be used to breed new and better varieties, according to scientists at IRRI.
Made by Advanced Analytical Technologies, Inc. (AATI) in Ames, Iowa, the Fragment AnalyzerTM is being used in IRRI’s new Genotyping Services Lab (GSL).
Dr. Michael Thomson, IRRI molecular geneticist and marker applications specialist, remarks, “After careful review, we decided on Fragment Analyzer. The instrument met our critical requirements, mainly throughput and reduced hands-on time to improve our laboratory workflow and ultimately our time to results. We are delighted because of the instrument’s capabilities and the wide range of applications that can be seamlessly run.”
The installation of the Fragment Analyzer is part of a larger effort to upgrade the facilities for the GSL services at IRRI, which aims to improve the efficiency of IRRI’s molecular marker genotyping activities.
